qping

Teacher guide

How to use qping

Start with one question. Add the other tools only when they save you time or help you make a better decision.

Fastest start

Run your first Ping

  1. Sign in as a teacher and choose Create → One-off Ping.
  2. Choose a saved class, or choose Anyone with the code for a temporary anonymous audience.
  3. Write one question and choose how students will answer.
  4. Choose Named, Safe Check, or Anonymous.
  5. Start the Ping and give students the code.
  6. Watch responses arrive. Show results and reveal the answer when you are ready.
You do not need a complete lesson or an Evidence Plan to ask one question.

Set up once

Create a class, roster, and PINs

  1. Open Classes and create the class.
  2. Paste student names or upload the roster CSV.
  3. Generate PINs. Print the sheet, export a mail merge, or open individual email drafts.
  4. Give students the shared class code and only their own PIN.

You can add, edit, or remove a student later. Reset a PIN only when it needs to change. qping prepares email text but does not send it for you.

Pilot setup

Set a class Evidence Plan

  1. Open Classes and select the class.
  2. Find Class Evidence Plan.
  3. Choose the learning area, specific skill, and instructional stage. Add success criteria or context only if useful.
  4. Save the plan.

New class Pings will reuse the saved skill and stage. You can change them on any Ping. The plan does not score, rank, or place students.

Create

Choose the right response type

  • Multiple choice: two to six choices.
  • Short answer: open response with optional exact-answer checking.
  • Equation or number: math entry with equivalent-answer checking.
  • Drawing: plain, grid, or coordinate paper with an optional model answer.
  • Image prompt: add an image and alternative text.

Questions, choices, answers, and projected results can include math notation.

Reuse what you have

Import questions

  1. Open the question importer while building a lesson.
  2. Use Smart Paste for copied questions or upload the qping CSV template.
  3. If AI assist is available, use it only to organize inconsistent teacher-written material.
  4. Review and edit every imported Ping before saving.

AI assist does not create personalized benchmark items and does not make scoring decisions.

Build once, reuse

Create a saved lesson

Choose Create, then start with a PDF, native qping slides, or a question-only lesson. Add Pings where you want to check understanding. Save the lesson to your Library and link it to any class that will use it.

Your PDF pages keep their order. A saved lesson can mix PDF pages, qping slides, images, supported video, and Pings.

Teach

Use Presentation Mode

  1. Open the lesson from Library and choose Present.
  2. Move through slides with the on-screen controls or keyboard.
  3. At a Ping, open responses and watch the response count.
  4. Use Show results, then Reveal answer.
  5. Continue, clarify, or choose a saved follow-up route.
  6. End the lesson when finished. The run remains in Records.

You can also use fullscreen, move the visual timer, open the separate attendance view, or project student initials and response status for a named class.

Keyboard shortcuts

Use the arrow keys or space to move forward and backspace to move back. On-screen controls remain available in fullscreen.

Choose before opening responses

Pick the response identity you need

Named responsesThe teacher can connect each answer to the student. Use this for individual follow-up and student-level Pulse Check evidence.
Safe Checkqping records who participated, then stores the submitted answer without the roster identity. Use it for a lower-pressure class read.
AnonymousNo identity and no participation record are collected. Guest audiences use this mode.

Safe Check and Anonymous responses do not create student-level Pulse Check patterns.

Student directions

Help students join

  1. Students open the qping student page.
  2. They enter the shared class code.
  3. For a saved class, they enter their private PIN.
  4. They may choose Remember this Chromebook if school policy allows it.

Students follow the current slide, answer the Ping, and see the class result and correct answer after the teacher reveals them. Students in a saved class can also keep private typed or drawn notes on slides.

Review

Start in Records Today

  1. Open Records. It starts on Today.
  2. Check live work and students not represented in the saved participation record.
  3. Open Class history, then open the source run before deciding what to do.
  4. Use the prompt, responses, response mode, attendance context, and saved next move together.

Records can export a run or its responses to CSV. Participation supports an attendance check, but qping never marks a student absent.

Available in the pilot

Use Pulse Check

  1. Create a named-response Ping for a saved class.
  2. Turn on Pulse Check.
  3. Confirm or replace the suggested skill, standards, instructional stage, and item process.
  4. Run the Ping normally.
  5. Open Records → Pulse Check to review patterns, evidence still accumulating, and prior reviews.
  6. Confirm a pattern or dismiss it with a reason.
Pulse Check supports teacher judgment. It does not diagnose students or automatically assign intervention tiers.
How evidence is handled

Accuracy is primary. Response time is used only as added context when the response is comparable and uninterrupted. qping waits for evidence across multiple items and dates before showing a review prompt. Current thresholds are pilot rules, not validated cut scores.

Teacher confirmed

Use standards suggestions

With Pulse Check on, qping can suggest standards from the prompt, correct answer, and class context. Select the right match, search for another standard, or enter the skill yourself. Nothing is attached until you choose it.

Educator-owned record

Record a support cycle

  1. Open Records → Support cycles and select a class.
  2. Choose a student and create a cycle.
  3. Record the local support level, focus, measurable goal, strategy, and review date.
  4. Return at the review date and update the record after reviewing the evidence.

qping shows participation and named-response accuracy as context. It does not choose the support level or start a cycle automatically.

Plain limits

What qping does not claim

  • Pulse Check thresholds are being tested. They are not validated cut scores.
  • qping does not provide national norms, grade equivalents, or a validated reading level.
  • qping does not diagnose, rank students, or assign intervention tiers.
  • Response time is not an achievement score or a hidden effort score.
  • AI assist organizes teacher-authored material. It does not run personalized scored benchmarks.
  • Student Google sign-in, SIS syncing, formal progress graphs, and confirmation assessments are not live yet.

See Research & Evidence for the evidence behind these choices and the pilot questions qping still has to answer.

Coming soon

Google sign-in for students is coming. Students currently join with a class code and PIN.

Quick answers

Do I need a roster?

No. Use Anyone with the code for a temporary anonymous Ping. Use a saved class when you need participation, named responses, student records, or Pulse Check.

Can students see each other's answers?

No. Students see only their own response and the class result the teacher reveals.

Does participation equal attendance?

No. It shows who participated in qping. The teacher still verifies attendance.
